We Never Saw It Coming: An Introduction to Christian Missions (textbook)
So, you kind of know which country you would like to work in – or at least the culture. You may or may not have been there yet, but it’s time to get to know that place before you set foot in the country and stick your foot in your mouth!
Sarah A. Lanier has written a small, highly-readable book on understanding cultures around the world. Foreign to Familiar[1] alerts the reader to the different types of cultures, how to identify your own and the one you will work in, where the pitfalls are, and how to live in that country as an informed visitor.
The internet has a wealth of information – so much, in fact, that you may have trouble sifting the hearsay from the facts. Certainly history, important people, form of government, and economic interests will be fairly reliable.
Write to people who live in that country. Try not to be a pest, for they are busy people, but ask them what you need to know before you come.
Survival Kit for Overseas Living by L. Robert Kohls[2] is written for American businessmen, but if you answer all the questions posed in that book, you would know the country better than many citizens.
